Inheritable Disease Minimum Age at Time of Test Where to go for testing What the examination or analysis looks for Boykin Spaniel Foundation reimbursement
DNA Tests Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC) No minimum Collecting of DNA samples is usually done in your home, by you. No vet visit needed.

The only OFA-recognized lab who does all three is Paw Print Genetics, Spokane, WA (www.pawprintgenetics.com)

Labs who do one or two can be found at www.ofa.org/diseases/dna-testeddiseases/all-dna-tests
EIC is the symptom of a genetic condition which causes the inability of the dog's body to make a chemical needed for brain-tomuscle nerve transmission. Possibly fatal. $25 if and when results are certified by the OFA
Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) CEA is a genetic eye disease, prohibiting proper development of many eye parts. Leads to partial or full blindness. $25 if and when results are certified by the OFA

Eyes Juvenile cataracts and more 6 week minimum but 12 weeks is preferred Must be done by a veterinary eye specialist (ophthalmologist). Find your nearest at www.acvo.org/ophthalmologist-search The ophthalmologist inspects for signs of fifteen or more hereditary eye diseases. Symptoms are similar to humans. $50 if and when results are certified by the OFA * Also provided through the recognized regional Boykin Spaniel Clubs at little/no cost
Skeleton and Ligaments Hip Dysplasia 24 months Best outcomes are when the x-rays are performed by a specialty veterinarian. Ask your regular vet to recommend, or ask your regional Boykin spaniel club president (find contact information on www.boykinspaniel.org) Proper development of the hip joint socket and ball, and the fit of the ball into the socket.  Improper development causes sporadic or permanent lameness, and arthritis as the dog reaches middle age. $75 if and when results are determined by OFA

Reimbursements are available regardless of OFA outcome
Patellar Luxation 12 months There should be almost no lateral movement of the kneecap when pushed by the vet. Severity of "trick knee" varies, causing pain and loss of the dog's mobility. $25 if and when results are certified by the OFA
Heart Pulmonic Stenosis 12 months Most general practice veterinarians perform these examinations right in their clinic, but may refer you to a specialist in the area if any suspicion of a problem is detected. General cardiac functionality is determined using a stethoscope; the doctor may determine that an echocardiogram (ultrasound ) is needed for conclusive results. $25 if and when results are certified by the OFA * Also provided through the recognized regional Boykin Spaniel Clubs at little/no cost

* Eye and heart reimbursements are only offered for exams completed after 9/17/21
** Reimbursement polices can be found at the Boykin Spaniel Foundation's website www.boykinspanielfoundation.org

You can find links to the required forms that your veterinarian (or yourself, for DNA-based tests) will need online at www.ofa.org/application-forms Exception to the above: only the veterinary ophthalmologist has the forms she or he uses, and you complete those at the time of the exam.
